Avon Indiana Basics
Avon, Indiana is located in Hendricks County approximately 13 miles from Indianapolis, Indiana. This small town of approximately 9,000 residents and 6.4 square miles of land mass was bestowed the title “Tree City USA” by the Arbor Day Foundation. Avon’s close proximity of three major highway– I-74, I-70 and I-465—gives it direct access to other major metropolitan areas in the Midwest. Avon residents in search of recreation and natural beauty will enjoy such local attractions as the Avon Perennial Gardens as well as the town’s many public parks.
History
Avon has gone by many different names throughout its history, including Hampton, Smootsdale, New Philadelphia and White Lick. It took a railway’s arbitrary act of planting a sign that read, “Avon” for the town’s name to finally be decided once and for all. It’s been a long time since the town had just 3 businesses all on the same street; 1952 to be exact. But since then Avon’s business community has blossomed to over 600 businesses, including such national brands as Walmart and Lowes to hundreds of medium and small businesses. Indeed, almost anything that one might need can now be found within this small town’s borders.
Government
Avon exists as an incorporated town, with a council president, 5-member town council and clerk-treasurer. All council members serve 4-year terms and are elected at-large. The council acts in a legislative capacity while the town manager acts in an executive capacity, signing various acts, decrees an ordinances into law.
Police
Approximately 4 patrol officers, 2 detectives, 3 sergeants, 6 patrolmen and 1 administrative assistant, a chief of police and assistant chief of police comprise the Avon Police Department. Since its inception in 1996 the department has handled thousands of calls for assistance in its area of coverage, which include over 150 lane mile. Officers are highly trained in all aspects of law enforcement, including all applicable local and state laws, proper firearm usage, basic apprehension techniques, witness questioning and basic interrogation, vehicular pursuit, traffic control and crime scene management to name a few. The department provides round-the-clock service to ensure that its patrons, the citizens of Avon, are safe and secure at all times.
Fire
The Washington Township/Avon Fire Department handles fire protection and emergency rescue for Avon and Washington Township. Responding to close to 10 exigent situations per day, the department’s 66-member staff has little time to get bored. In all, the department employs approximately 66 personnel. All firefighters possess basic EMT-level medical skills. There are typically around 3 firefighters on staff who possess advanced paramedical skills. The department’s responsibilities include basic fire protection, HAZMAT response, extrication, investigation, fire safety inspections and basic public education to name a few. Equipment consists of 2 fire engines, a HAZMAT vehicle, a ladder company, and mobile command center and 2 EMS vehicles.
Parks, Recreation, and Beautification Council
The Avon Parks, Recreation, and Beautification Council oversees and maintains several parks including the Avon Perennial Gardens, the Town Hall Park, the Washington Township Community Park and the World War II Memorial Park. These beautiful and well maintained parks offer residents opportunities for a variety of fitness and recreational and activities such as mountain biking, jogging, walking, dog walking, inline skating and site seeing. Facilities include a children’s playground, a native wetland, a dam, waterfalls and gardens.

A strong sense of community unites the residents of this vibrant small town. Avon residents enjoy a great variety commercial and cultural richness, from the Hendricks Symphony and Choir to the Hendricks County Rib Fest. The town’s many businesses provide jobs for its residents and keep the local economy rolling. Avon’s close proximity to Indianapolis affords access to all the resources of a major metropolitan area, including the Indianapolis International Airport.
